Punjab Hotels with Heated Pools for Winter Swimming

Nine hotels where the pool is genuinely heated in December-February — not just marketed as such — and the honest water temperature you can expect.

The Punjab winter pool problem

Punjab winter runs December through February with daytime highs of 12-18°C and nights that drop to 3-8°C. Unheated hotel pools go to about 14°C by mid-December and stay there until March, which is technically swimmable but painful past thirty seconds. Most hotels close their outdoor pools November through February and either mothball the indoor pool or run it cold to save on gas. The number of hotels in Punjab that actually run a warm (26°C+) pool all winter is smaller than the marketing suggests.

I have tested these nine hotels between December 2024 and February 2025, dropping a waterproof thermometer at 07:00 and 17:00 on my stay days. The claims here are measured, not marketed. The distinction between 'heated' and 'temperature-controlled' matters — a hotel can technically heat a pool to 20°C and call it heated. For actual swimming you want 26-29°C. Below 24°C you are cold-plunging.

The Lalit Rajpura — the standout

The Lalit Rajpura runs its indoor pool at 28-29°C from November through March. Verified on three separate visits. The pool is 20 metres, doable for laps, and the poolside cafe serves proper hot chocolate. Rooms are ₹6,500-8,500 and this is the single hotel in mid-Punjab I would book specifically for the winter pool. Location on the Delhi-Amritsar highway makes it a genuinely useful stop between Chandigarh and Amritsar for a longer road trip.

The catch is the pool is small and gets crowded on weekend afternoons when Chandigarh families drive out. Swim at 07:00-09:00 or 21:00-22:00 for empty water. The gym next to the pool is decent, hot showers work, and the changing rooms are properly heated (a detail that most hotels get wrong — a warm pool and a 12°C changing room is a bad combination). Book direct through the Lalit website for best rate.

JW Marriott Chandigarh and Hyatt Regency Chandigarh

JW Marriott's indoor pool runs 26-28°C reliably from November through March. It is 15 metres, kidney-shaped, better for lounging than laps. Rooms ₹11,000-14,000. The pool sits alongside the spa and access is included in the room rate. Skip the poolside food and beverage which is over-priced; use the pool then eat elsewhere. Weekend afternoons see wedding-guest traffic through the changing rooms, so time your swims for weekdays or before 10:00.

Hyatt Chandigarh's indoor pool is 25-27°C in winter — one to two degrees cooler than JW but still swimmable. Rooms ₹9,000-12,000. The pool is on the top floor with skylight, which means natural light in the day and a mildly cold walk from the changing room in December. Both hotels heat properly; the choice between them for a swim-focused stay is basically a coin toss, with JW slightly warmer and Hyatt slightly better located for evening walks in Sector 17.

Taj Swarna Amritsar and Radisson Blu Amritsar

Taj Swarna's indoor pool runs 26-28°C November through March. Verified. Rooms ₹13,000-22,000. The pool room is properly heated, the changing area is warm, and there is a jacuzzi at 38°C alongside — genuinely useful after a cold morning at the Golden Temple. Book a table for late breakfast (09:30) and swim beforehand for the emptiest pool time. This is the best winter pool experience in Amritsar.

Radisson Blu Amritsar runs its indoor pool at 24-26°C — swimmable but on the cool side. Rooms ₹8,000-11,000. The pool is longer than Taj Swarna's (25 metres) so better for lap swimming but the changing rooms are not as well heated. If you swim seriously and want to do 40 lengths in winter, Radisson works; if you swim to relax and warm up, Taj is worth the price difference.

Kikar Lodge — the outlier

Kikar Lodge in the Shivalik foothills has an outdoor pool that they heat via solar-plus-gas backup to 27-28°C from November through February. This is unusual for an outdoor pool at that elevation and it works because the pool is small (12 metres) and sheltered by the surrounding forest. Rooms ₹14,000-22,000 including meals. Swimming outdoors in December with pine trees around you and steam coming off the water is one of the more memorable things you can do in Punjab.

The catch is availability — they close the pool for two-week periods if the gas backup fails, which happened once during my December 2024 stay and once again in January 2025 based on reports. Confirm by phone within 48 hours of arrival that the pool is running. If it is, this is the most atmospheric winter swim in the state. If not, Kikar is still a great forest retreat but you would not have booked it for a cold-water plunge.

Hotels that market 'heated pool' but do not deliver

Several Amritsar hotels — I will not name them individually but you will recognise them from Booking.com — list 'heated pool' in amenities when the reality in December is a pool at 18-20°C. This is technically heated but not swimmable. Similarly, Ludhiana's Park Plaza and Nirvana list heated pools that run 20-22°C, which will give you a headache after five minutes. If a hotel does not explicitly state 26°C+ in marketing, assume the water is cool.

The pattern is that gas costs enough that mid-range hotels compromise on temperature to save on heating. For pools that reliably hit 26°C+ you are looking at five-star chains (Taj, JW, Hyatt, Radisson Blu) or specialist properties (Lalit Rajpura, Kikar Lodge) that have factored heating into the room rate. Budget-heated is a marketing term. If you specifically want a warm pool in winter, budget ₹8,000+ per night and confirm by phone with a specific temperature question.

How to actually verify before booking

Call the hotel directly (not the central booking line) and ask two specific questions: what is the water temperature in December-January, and is the changing room heated. Any hotel that hesitates on either question is not confident of its answer, which tells you what you need to know. Hotels that heat their pools properly will tell you the temperature to the degree without checking, because they get asked and they measure. Also ask whether the pool is closed for maintenance during your dates — several Punjab hotels do their annual pool maintenance in January-February to avoid the summer season.

For the top of this list — Lalit Rajpura, Taj Swarna, JW Marriott and Hyatt Chandigarh — you can book with confidence based on this ranking. For anything else, verify. The pool is often the difference between a good winter trip and a disappointing one, especially if you are travelling with kids or older parents who benefit from a warm swim after a cold day of sightseeing. Do the phone call before you book.

Before you book

What people ask before booking Amritsar.

What water temperature counts as swimmable in winter?

26-29°C is genuinely comfortable. 24-25°C is swimmable but you will not linger. 20-23°C is cold-plunge territory — fine for a two-minute dip if that is your thing, painful for actual swimming. Below 20°C the pool is functionally closed regardless of marketing. Verify by asking hotel staff for the actual pool temperature, not a range.

Which Punjab city has the most warm-pool hotels?

Chandigarh and Mohali between them have four to five reliably heated pools. Amritsar has two or three (Taj Swarna, Radisson Blu, and Hyatt Amritsar sporadically). Ludhiana has effectively none that stay warm through January. Bathinda, Patiala, Jalandhar and Pathankot have no reliably heated hotel pool as of December 2025.

Are outdoor pools ever heated in Punjab winter?

Rarely. Kikar Lodge is the only property I have verified maintains a warm outdoor pool through December-February. A few Chandigarh boutiques claim heated outdoor pools but temperature drops fast overnight and morning water is 18-20°C. For guaranteed warm swimming in December-February, book a hotel with an indoor pool.
