What to expect at Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib
In December 1704 the Sahibzade Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh, aged 9 and 7, refused to convert to Islam and were sealed alive inside a wall on orders of the Sirhind governor Wazir Khan. Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib marks the exact spot; the sacred bricks are preserved in a small basement chamber called Bhora Sahib beneath the main shrine. It is one of the most emotionally charged pilgrimages in Sikhism, particularly during the annual Shaheedi Jor Mela in late December.
The complex spans several acres and includes three linked gurdwaras — Fatehgarh Sahib, Jyoti Swarup and Bibangarh — plus a sarovar. Sirhind town sits directly on the Delhi-Amritsar highway and rail line, making it a natural half-day stop between Chandigarh and Ludhiana. Enter via the main eastern gate, cover your head, and descend to Bhora Sahib after paying respects in the main darbar. The atmosphere is subdued rather than celebratory; be quiet.
