Day 1 morning: Amritsar's core

Start at the Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) by 6am while the marble is cool and the crowds thin. Entry is free, head cover mandatory (bandanas handed out at the entrance). Queue for langar in the community kitchen off Ghanta Ghar Chowk — the meal is free but a $1 donation feels right. Walk five minutes to Jallianwala Bagh, the 1919 massacre memorial, which opens at 6:30am and takes about 45 minutes. Grab kulcha and chole at Kulcha Land on Ranjit Avenue, roughly $2 a plate.

Day 1 afternoon and evening: Wagah border

Nap or shop the Hall Bazaar for phulkari dupattas ($8-15) before the Wagah border ceremony. Shared taxis from the Golden Temple area run about $4 return; leave by 3pm as gates close early. The flag-lowering theatrics with Pakistan start around 5:15pm in summer, 4:15pm winter. Return to Amritsar for dinner at Kesar Da Dhaba in Chowk Passian — the dal makhani and paneer bhurji combo runs $6. Cap the night with a second Golden Temple visit; the illuminated dome after 9pm is unmissable.

Day 2: Chandigarh in a day

Take the 6:25am Shatabdi Express from Amritsar to Chandigarh (about $12, 4.5 hours) or fly the 55-minute hop for around $60. In Chandigarh, taxi straight to the Rock Garden in Sector 1 ($0.50 entry) — Nek Chand's mosaic sculpture maze takes 90 minutes. Walk to Sukhna Lake for chai and paddleboats ($2). Lunch at Pal Dhaba, Sector 28, for butter chicken ($5). Afternoon: Le Corbusier's Capitol Complex in Sector 1 requires a free permit from the tourism office an hour ahead — bring your passport.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask before they set off on this one.

Is 48 hours enough for Punjab?

For a first taste, yes — Amritsar and Chandigarh cover the sacred and the modern sides. You’ll miss rural Punjab and Patiala, but the highlight reel works.

How do I get from Amritsar to Chandigarh quickly?

The Shatabdi Express (train 12013) leaves Amritsar at 05:00 and reaches Chandigarh by 09:35. AC Chair Car is around $12 and books out; reserve on IRCTC 3-5 days ahead.

Do I need to book Wagah border tickets?

No, entry is free and first-come. Foreigners have a separate VIP enclosure — show your passport at the gate and you’ll skip most of the queue.

Is the Golden Temple open at night?

Yes, effectively 24 hours. The palki sahib ceremony closes it briefly around 10:30pm-4am in summer. The best photography light is 5:30-6:30am and 8-9pm.
