Sleep: gurdwara stays and hostels

The Golden Temple runs free accommodation for pilgrims at Sri Guru Ram Das Niwas and Sri Guru Nanak Niwas next to the complex — dorm beds, basic but clean, donation-based (leave $3-5). For more privacy, Jugaadus Ecohostel on Green Avenue does dorms at $7 a night with breakfast. In Chandigarh, Zostel Chandigarh in Sector 46 has dorms from $8 and a decent rooftop. Book directly, not through aggregators, to skip the 15% markup.

Eat: langar, dhabas, and street

Langar at the Golden Temple runs 24/7 and feeds anyone — dal, roti, kheer, no charge, no upsell. Do it once for the experience and once because you’re broke. Otherwise, chole bhature at Kanha Sweets on Lawrence Road runs $1.20; a full paratha thali at Brothers Dhaba is $3. In Chandigarh, the Sindhi Sweets counter in Sector 17 does samosa-chole for $1. Avoid the Ranjit Avenue mall food courts — same food, triple the price.

Move cheap: buses, autos, shared cabs

Amritsar-Chandigarh by ordinary Punjab Roadways bus costs about $6 and takes 5.5 hours; the AC Volvo is $12. Inside Amritsar, cycle rickshaws cost $0.60 for short hops and are more atmospheric than autos. For Wagah border, shared taxis from the temple hostel area are $3 return per seat if you split with 4 others. Chandigarh's local buses cover all sectors for $0.30 a ride and are the easiest way to hop between the Rock Garden, Sukhna Lake, and Sector 17.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask before they set off on this one.

Can I stay at the Golden Temple for free?

Yes, the gurdwara runs pilgrim dorms with segregated male and female areas. Bring your own bedsheet if possible and don’t overstay — 3 nights is the informal limit.

Is langar really free for tourists?

Completely. Just cover your head, wash hands, and sit in the line. A small donation at the box on the way out is polite but not required.

How cheap is Punjab compared to Delhi?

About 20-30% cheaper for food and transport, similar for mid-range hotels. Amritsar dhaba meals are the standout — $2-3 for what would cost $6 in Delhi.

Are night buses safe in Punjab?

Punjab Roadways and PEPSU buses on the Amritsar-Chandigarh-Delhi corridor are fine and busy. Book the Volvo AC sleeper for overnight comfort; avoid unbranded private operators for solo travel.
