Durgiana Temple
The Hindu 'silver temple' of Amritsar, mirroring the Golden Temple's architecture but dedicated to Durga, Lakshmi and Vishnu.
Silver-domed Durgiana Temple mirrored in its sacred tank at night
What to expect at Durgiana Temple
Rebuilt in 1921 by Guru Harsai Mal Kapoor in deliberate homage to Harmandir Sahib, Durgiana sits on an island in its own sarovar with silver-clad doors and a marble parikrama. The presiding deities are Durga, Vishnu and Lakshmi, and the temple is also called Lakshmi Narayan Mandir. It is Amritsar's most important Hindu shrine and only 1.5 km west of the Golden Temple — the two are easily combined in a single evening.
Come after sunset when the exterior is floodlit and reflected across the tank. Enter via the ornate silver gate on the east side, walk the parikrama clockwise, and time your visit for the 19:30 aarti when brass bells and conch shells fill the compound. There is a small Bara Hanuman Mandir in the same complex where families tie their sons in cloth cradles during Langoor Mela (October, ten days before Dussehra).
