What to expect at Gurdwara Baba Atal Sahib
Built in memory of Baba Atal Rai, the son of the sixth Guru Hargobind who gave up his life at the age of nine, this 40-metre tower rises directly south of the Harmandir Sahib parikrama. Each of the nine storeys represents a year of Atal Rai's life. Most Golden Temple visitors miss it entirely — a shame, because the ground floor walls carry some of the finest surviving frescoes of Sikh sacred history, painted in the 19th century using mineral pigments.
The entrance is on the south side of the Kaulsar sarovar, five minutes on foot from the Golden Temple clock tower. Climb the internal staircase (steep, uneven) to the upper storeys for the best rooftop view of the gilded Harmandir. Photography is permitted on the exterior and stairwell but not in the inner sanctum. The complex also runs one of Amritsar's oldest langars, uninterrupted for four centuries.
