What to expect at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Tarn Taran
Twenty-five kilometres south of Amritsar, Tarn Taran means 'the boat that ferries across' — the sarovar here was dug by Guru Arjan Dev in 1590 and is the biggest of any gurdwara in the world at nearly five acres of water. Historically it was a pilgrimage site for lepers, who bathed in the tank believing in its curative power. The gilded main shrine on the west bank was completed by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the early 19th century.
The Amavas mela on every new moon draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from surrounding villages and is the best time to see rural Punjabi Sikh devotion at full intensity — though also the worst time for a quiet visit. On ordinary days it is peaceful and photogenic, with only local devotees present. Reach it by frequent bus from Amritsar's ISBT (about 45 minutes, $1) or by shared taxi. Cover your head, deposit shoes, and walk the parikrama clockwise.
