What to expect at Gurudwara Sri Muktsar Sahib
Muktsar — 'pool of liberation' — takes its name from the forty Sikh soldiers who died defending Guru Gobind Singh against Mughal forces at the Battle of Khidrana in December 1705. The Guru personally tore up the disclaimer letter (bedavā) they had earlier signed and blessed them as Mukte (liberated ones). Three linked gurdwaras mark the battle: Tuti Gandi Sahib where the letter was torn, Shaheed Ganj where the Mukte were cremated, and Darbar Sahib around the sarovar.
The town is remote — in southwest Punjab near the Rajasthan border, 240 km from Amritsar and 60 km from Bathinda — but sees over a million pilgrims during Maghi Mela on 13-14 January each year. Outside that window it is calm and easily managed in half a day. Come by train from Bathinda (90 minutes) or bus from Faridkot. Free serai accommodation and langar are available at the main complex.
