What to expect at Kali Devi Mandir
Commissioned in 1936 by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, Kali Devi Mandir enshrines an unusual six-foot black stone idol of Maha Kali that was brought to Patiala from Bengal in the 18th century. The temple stands directly opposite Baba Ala Singh's Tibbi Sahib gurdwara in the old city, a striking example of Patiala's historic Hindu-Sikh religious pluralism. The architecture blends Bengali chala-style curved roofs with local red sandstone and marble.
Devotees offer goats symbolically (no animal sacrifice takes place inside the compound anymore) and the temple is particularly crowded on Tuesdays and Saturdays, days sacred to Kali. Both Navratris — Chaitra (March-April) and Sharad (September-October) — see nine days of intensive worship with fire pujas and continuous kirtan. Reach the temple from Patiala bus stand in ten minutes by auto-rickshaw; it's a short walk from Qila Mubarak.
