Amritsar without spending

The Golden Temple is free 24 hours; the langar (community kitchen) feeds 100,000 people daily at no charge. Volunteer for 30-60 minutes washing dishes or rolling rotis — it's actively encouraged and one of the most memorable things you can do in India. Jallianwala Bagh, next door, is also free (donation optional). Walk Heritage Street to Ghanta Ghar clock tower for evening buzz. The Ram Bagh Gardens with the Maharaja Ranjit Singh statue and museum grounds are free to walk; only the museum charges $0.60 entry.

Chandigarh's free architecture and lakes

The Capitol Complex tour (High Court, Secretariat, Open Hand monument) is free with a passport permit from the Sector 6 Tourism office. Le Corbusier's Le Corbusier Centre in Sector 19 charges nominal entry but the Government Museum grounds and Rose Garden (Zakir Hussain Rose Garden, 1,600 varieties) in Sector 16 are free. Sukhna Lake's promenade is a free 3km walk and morning yoga runs at 6am on the shore. The Sector 17 plaza itself is basically a free open-air pedestrian zone.

The Wagah ceremony and gurdwaras across the state

Wagah border ceremony costs nothing — reach it by shared taxi for $3 from Amritsar. All gurdwaras — Tarn Taran Sahib, Anandpur Sahib, Fatehgarh Sahib, Goindwal Sahib — are free to enter with free langar meals included. Bring a scarf for the head cover and cover legs and arms. The Virasat-e-Khalsa museum in Anandpur Sahib is free, closed Mondays, and is one of the best museum experiences in India. Cycling the sector grid in Chandigarh (rent for $2 an hour from Sukhna Lake) is basically the world's best low-cost architecture tour.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask before they set off on this one.

Is entry to the Golden Temple really free?

Yes, completely — including the langar meal. A donation box sits at the exit; contribute or don’t, no one tracks it.

How do I volunteer at the Golden Temple langar?

Walk into the langar hall's kitchen side and ask — they’ll hand you a scarf and put you on the roti line, dish-washing, or vegetable prep. No paperwork, no minimum time.

Is the Capitol Complex really free?

Yes, but you need a permit from the Chandigarh Tourism office in Sector 6 (or UT Guest House). Bring your passport; tours run at 10am and 3pm.

Are there free walking tours in Amritsar?

The gurdwara's own Golden Temple heritage walk is free and runs at 4pm from the information office. Private walking tours cost $10-15.
